The shapes are configured as such that if the space between each piece were to be removed, the pieces would cleanly form the whole. The entire design is symmetrical on a vertical center line. The 2 upper sections are a mirror image of the other, and the middle section is a long narrow oval which is pointed on both ends. This center piece has horizontal as well as vertical symmetry.
