Patrick Mahomes is arguably the most electrifying quarterback in N.F.L. history. As the face of the Kansas City Chiefs, he changed the way the quarterback position is played. His over-the-top playmaking ability, insane arm strength, and clutch play have continued to attract fans. Drafted by the Chiefs in 2017, Mahomes has led the team to multiple Super Bowls. He also won league M.V.P. awards and became one of the most marketable athletes in sports. Beyond his substantial success in the field, Mahomes has effectively built his personal brand through a multitude of endorsements and business ventures.

In November 2024, he applied for a trademark for the phrase Hatrick Mahomes.  The trademark now awaits the assignment of an examiner from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The trademark has been filed by the BBKB LLC application, which is an entity connected to Mahomes. The application shows that the company intends to use the trademark on a range of athletic clothing, including shirts, jackets, and shoes, as well as hats and caps.

In October 2023, Sports Punchline published a humorous take on sportstars' names. Footballer Patrick Mahomes became known as Hatrick Mahomes. This is because his last name is a near rhyme of “hat trick.” A hat trick is a sports term for when a player scores three points in one game. This sort of branding is a natural fit for Mahomes’s position in the game-changing athlete constellation, one in which he often seems to be churning through milestones and records in threes — Super Bowl wins, MVPs, game-changing comebacks.

Building the Mahomes brand

This trademark application isn’t Mahomes’ first branding venture. In 2021, Adidas worked with Mahomes on his own bespoke logo. The logo included intertwined initials of “PM” and a gladiator mask and also harbored a warrior mentality on the field. Mahomes has also launched one-of-a-kind apparel exercise gear, and deals with high-profile companies. These include Oakley, State Farm, and Coors Light.

Mahomes formed a partnership with Prime, a new energy drink, in August 2024. It is a brand co-founded by YouTube influencers Logan Paul and KSI. That partnership also led to a limited-edition Prime bottle with Mahomes’ name and logo on it, solidifying the spot of star quarterback in the world of commerce.

What’s next for “Hatrick Mahomes”?

It’s unclear at this point how Mahomes plans to use the new “Hatrick Mahomes” brand. The filing indicates it would be for use on athletic wear and merchandise. Given Mahomes’ history of fruitful businesses, fans can expect to see exclusive lines of clothes, promotional goods, and potential partnerships under the future Hatrick Mahomes label.

And as the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback further expands his footprint both on and off the football field, this latest trademark application is the latest sign of his developing legacy. He is not just an N.F.L. superstar. He has also become a powerful brand in sports and business.
