Frequently Asked Questions
What is a patent?
A patent is a legal right granted by a government authority to an inventor or assignee for a new invention. This right provides the inventor with exclusive rights to make, use, sell, and distribute the invention for a specified period, typically 20 years from the filing date.
In exchange for these exclusive rights, the inventor must publicly disclose the details of the invention. The purpose of patents is to encourage innovation by protecting inventors' rights while eventually contributing to public knowledge.
