Frequently Asked Questions

What is the process for reserving a name for my LLC in Massachusetts?

Reserving a name for your LLC in Massachusetts is a straightforward process. The first step is to ensure that your chosen name adheres to the state's naming guidelines. The name must include the words ‘’limited liability company’’ or the abbreviation “LLC” and should not contain words that could confuse it with a government agency. Some words, like attorney, bank, and university, require additional paperwork and a licensed individual's involvement. You can check the availability of your chosen name on the State of Massachusetts website. It's also advisable to check if the web domain for your desired name is available and to set up a professional email address for your business. Once you've chosen a name, you can reserve it for up to 60 days for a fee of $30. If you need more time, you can extend the reservation for another 60 days for an additional $30 fee. However, you must file the extension before the original reservation expires. You can request a name reservation in person with the Secretary of the Commonwealth Corporations Division or through the mail.
