Frequently Asked Questions

What information can be obtained from a business entity search in Oregon?

An Oregon business entity search can provide a wealth of information for those interested in forming a limited liability company (LLC) or researching an existing business. This search tool, available through the Oregon Secretary of State, can help you determine if the name you want for your LLC is unique and available. However, it's important to note that even if a name appears available, the Secretary of State has the final say in its approval. The search tool can also be used to gather information about an active business. This includes whether the business has been legally formed, its current status, and other relevant details. To check the availability of your desired LLC name, you can use the Oregon Business Registry. This involves submitting the name of your LLC and using the “Search Methods” tool to run two searches: an “Exact words in any order” search and an “Extended search”. The search results can help you understand if your chosen name is unique, too similar to existing names, or identical to another business name. If your chosen name is too similar to an existing name, the State of Oregon may reject your application. However, you will be notified of any conflicts and given a 45-day period to create a new LLC name and resubmit your application.
