Coming Soon: Amazon's New Brand Registry

Amazon's New Initiative Against Counterfeits

Good news for those of you who sell goods on Amazon.com! Amazon is launching an initiative next month to remove knock-off stuff from its site in its ever ongoing fight against counterfeits. The largest online retailer is taking a step to fend off fake items.

The New IP Brand Registry

Next month Amazon will allow companies to register their trademark registered logos and intellectual property with Amazon, in an effort to remove counterfeit goods from its site. What this new IP brand registry will do is to allow Amazon, brands, and shoppers to flag counterfeit items when discovered. Then Amazon can remove the counterfeit listings and certain seller accounts can be flagged.

Past Issues with Counterfeits on Amazon

In the past counterfeiters have sold discounted versions of authentic goods on Amazon. This behavior has prompted lawsuits, most notably one from Apple, against merchants on the site.

Amazon's Hopes for the Brand Registry

Amazon is hoping that the brand registry will not only battle counterfeit goods, but will also attract more reputable third-party sellers. Raising consumer confidence about the Amazon marketplace is important for the online giant, since Amazon receives a cut of the commission from third-party sales.

Announcement of the Plan

Peter Faricy, Vice President of Amazon Marketplace, announced the detail plan at the Shoptalk Conference in Las Vegas on Monday, March 20th. The brand registry will be available for free in North America.
